Why is it not right for adults to wear tennis shoes in Germany?

I asked a previous question about offensive clothing and didn't get a clear answer so i thought i'd ask this specific question.

Why don't adults in germany wear tennis shoes? What kind of shoes do they wear? I'll be walking a lot so tennis shoes seem the most reasonable of my choices...

Why is it not right for adults to wear tennis shoes in Germany?
I live in Germany and I can guarrantee you that a lot of adults wear tennis shoes in their free time. My dad who is 57 years old wears tennis shoes....everyone wears them....especially young adults.

Work is different of course. Depending on the type of work you do, it might not be appropriate to wear tennis shoes.
Reply:It is true that Europeans generally don't wear as casual footwear as we do in the US - times have changed. And about five or six years ago - the fashion rage was those bowling shoe-looking shoes that were basically non-white tennis shoes. Report It

Reply:What?? thats crap.. not true.. americans make up lots of stuff about germany.....
Reply:No tennis shoes?? Nobody ever told me that. Sure if my husband at his office in Berlin would show up in tennis shoes this would be inappropriate. But it would be the same in his office in Atlanta.

So don´t worry, if you don´t have to be well dressed tennis shoes are just fine, although I could think of something more comfortable than that. And if you are in Germany try to get shoes from GANTER this is comfortable. :-)
Reply:Yes, it's true that most Germans don't wear tennis shoes, and by wearing them you mark yourself as a sloppy American. Most Germans wear leather shoes, and most of the women wear these horrible pointy shoes.
Reply:Germany --- no tennis shoes ? :-)

Remind two of the most famous companies producing tennis shoes were German companies ( Addidas, Puma)

Greetings from Hamburg, Germany

Reply:It's just a cultural/fashion thing. Most wear "polishable" everyday shoes.

Nobody will get mad if you wear tennis shoes; they'll just be able to spot you as an American.
Reply:You can wear SNEAKERS!! They are not the same! And I have never heard of not wearing tennis shoes either except for not at work.
Reply:Your question is so ridiculous that I have to side with kalshnikov

Get a brain while you at it.

Berliner.
Reply:I think they have been kidding you. Wearing tennis shoes is no particular problem in Germany. Of course, if you are going to work in a bank or in another sort of management environment, sloppy clothing would not be advisable, but I think that's true everywhere in the world. But on the whole, casual clothing is no big deal.
Reply:I am an American living in Germany with my husband, who is German. He and his friends laugh at tennis shoes-I think the white color is what looks very American. Most tennis shoes sold here are different colors-I just bought some that are tan, but they do sell white ones.

Wear tennis shoes-whether they are white or another color. It´s not offensive-I think people here just kinda will know you´re probably not from this country.
Reply:How weird ? No tennis shoes ??? Well if you are into German shoewear, try the DrMartens boots or the Birkenstock sandals. Both are way ugly but remarkably good footwear. Check out their websites, actually some newer models keep the very good respect for feet and usability with new looks ;-)
Reply:I think someone was joking with you. They wear tennis shoes in Germany. Maybe not at a night club but you will see people wearing them for comfort on the streets. The same things that are offensive in the US are offensive there. You will see a plenty of people wearing jeans on the street as well.
Reply:WOW i didnt know they couldnt wear tennis shoes thats strange! its crazy how so many countries are soooo different!
Reply:Because Nazis wore tennis shoes and they dont want to cycle the violence / evil again
